Artist Statement: The vocalist of Masochist, Rose Wadsworth (Dead End Design/co-exhibitor) approached me to do an artwork for a t-shirt highlighting lyrics from unreleased works. The three songs were about gendered violence, the exploitation of cheap labour and Australia’s mistreatment of refugees in Manus Island and Nauru. Rose asked if I could include the shadowy figures that have become a motif in many of my recent works which can be seen in the stalking man, the dictatorial manager and the protesting refugee in the reflection of another refugee’s eye. Many of the scenes in this artwork are confronting, which they are intended to be in order for the the art to reflect the emotion and message behind Rose’s lyrics. The artwork is supposed to inspire feelings of dread, horror and sadness as these are appropriate responses to the issues being discussed through the music. Each panel was drawn separately and then redrawn together for the final artwork.
