When visiting South Africa, I had the opportunity to visit the District 6 museum which highlights the lives of people of colour under apartheid rule who lived in Zonnebloem (District 6). A sobering and fascinating insight into my own peoples history. One piece in the museum the captured my attention was a ‘Europeans Only' bench in the middle of the Museum. My Aunty (Second Cousin), Pricilla decided to in a rebellious and symbolic gesture wanted a photo sitting on the seat. In this piece the bench seat is painted over the top of a tourist map of Table Mountain which is a large mountain at the heart of Cape Town. Since that moment with my aunty, I have wanted to commemorated that moment and decided to overlay it with the symbolism of having a seat at the table. Just how Pricilla meant the gesture to be taken.
