This work was inspired after reading Frantz Fanon’s White Masks, Black Skin. Frantz Fanon is the grandfather of what is now known as decolonisation theory.
As someone who has lived in the dichotomy of being bi-racial wit African heritage and growing up isolated from cultural roots. The idea of a ‘white mask’ utilised as a mechanism for psychological safety resonated with me deeply.
There is but one destiny for the black man. And it is white.” - Frantz Fanon
At one time of my life I desired to be accepted; to be seen as cultured, intelligent and most of all not seen as the stereotypes of the aggressive, savage nigger seen in the western cultural psyche. To be accepted, means I had to live up to the dominant cultural expectations and values which are inherently white.

This pieces is an act of love and hope towards my younger self and to others facing the same crisis.
To break free of the white mask that was thrust upon thee, to embrace and reconcile the identity you so often recoil from.
