905 x 1475mm British White Paint on an Australian Flag There is a dichotomy of being a generational person of colour in Australia. Australia is your birth country, you have your birth certificate, its the only place you have known. But all your life you have been made to like an outsider, to feel alien, that you are tolerated but not quite accepted because you are other than the norm. For all of Australia’s decree of multiculturalism, you will forever be, not Australian. Australia in the subconscious of this country still means white.
Examples of this can be told by many Australian born people of colour. The endless barrage of questions throughout a lifetime; how long have you been here?, where are you from.. yeah but like from..from? And the one statement that drives it at all home ‘but you dont look Australian’.
